- What is Teeth Whitening? Whitening is a safe,
exciting and an effective process in which a peroxide solution
is applied to the surface of your teeth to whiten them. Teeth
that are stained or discolored by age, smoking, red wine,
coffee and/or tea can be treated successfully with bleaching.
Note: teeth whitening will not lighten existing fillings or
crowns. Teeth that have been stained by antibiotics
(Tetracycline) will not whiten and may require veneers to
achieve pleasing results. Older fillings or discolored crowns
may be replaced with newer, more attractive restorations after
bleaching. Also, chipped teeth may be restored after whitening
for nice results.
- How is it done? We offer three of the best
professional systems used to whiten teeth:
1) Zoom! is the most effective way possible to successfully
whiten teeth. Zoom! is an in-office whitening system that
takes place in one appointment. This is the method that you
may have seen on ABC’s Extreme Makeovers and has become
extremely popular due to its speed and great results. Zoom! is
safe, effective and very fast. At your whitening appointment
we place a concentrated bleaching gel onto your teeth and then
apply an ultraviolet light to activate the gel. The gel is
then removed and you have significantly whiter smile in a
single appointment. Again, Zoom! generally has the best
results of any whitening system available today.
2) Bleaching Trays involves the fabrication of custom trays
that fit over your teeth. In the comfort of your own home you
apply a small amount of bleaching gel into your custom trays.
The trays are then worn for 45 minutes daily for approximately
2 weeks. The advantage of the bleaching trays is that you can
control the results, you always have the trays to “touch-up”
as needed and they are slightly more cost effective than Zoom!
3) Treswhite Strips are an excellent alternative to whitening
for someone who may be on a budget. Treswhite strips are
prescription strength whitening strips that are available
through your dentist only. Treswhite strips work well and are
much more effective that “over the counter products” such as
Crest White Strips or similar products. Treswhite Strips can
also be used for “touch-up” treatments for someone who has
completed Zoom!
Results you can expect: All methods work great. Typically you
may see a dramatic improvement of six or more shades lighter
depending on the beginning shade of your teeth. Yellowish
teeth respond the best to bleaching. Brownish teeth are
slightly less responsive and grayish teeth are the most
difficult to lighten. About 30% of patients have some
sensitivity during the bleaching process; however, this is
temporary and ends once the procedure is over.
How long does it last? Teeth that have been whitened can stay
lighter for years. If you ever notice that your teeth begin to
“tone down” or darken then you can simply “touch-up” as
needed. Either bleaching trays or Treswhite strips can be used
to “touch-up” as needed. If you smoke, drink a lot of coffee,
red wine and/or tea, you may need touch-up treatments more
frequently.
